Palau joined the UN in 1994, the last trust territory to do so. In the General Assembly, Palau has one vote : the same as China, the same as the United States. AHA: Palau's UN ambassador has used that vote to push ocean conservation onto the world agenda. When the president of a nation of 18,000 speaks about sea level rise, the room listens : not because of military power, but because Palau is already living the future that every coastal nation fears. The tide gauges in Malakal Harbor show the ocean rising 7mm per year, and the freshwater lens under the islands is already contaminated by salt. Palau is not warning the world; Palau is the warning.
