Constitution Day
The anniversary of the 1979 Constitution : and here is the AHA: Palau's constitution was the first in the world to declare a nuclear-free zone. The United States wanted to store nuclear materials in Palau as part of the Compact of Free Association. The Palauans said no. It took seven referendums and eleven years before the 75% supermajority finally passed. That is seven times the entire country voted on whether to allow nuclear weapons on their islands, and seven times they said no until the pressure and the economic reality finally shifted the vote. The constitution is a document written in resistance.
