Shark Sanctuary Day

In 2009, Palau created the world's first shark sanctuary : 230,000 square miles of ocean where shark fishing is banned. AHA: Palau's entire exclusive economic zone is bigger than California, but its land mass is smaller than Washington, DC. This tiny nation controls more ocean than most countries, and it chose to protect the apex predator that every other nation was slaughtering for soup. A single Palauan shark is worth $1.9 million in tourism revenue over its lifetime versus $158 dead on a fishing boat. The math changed the world : more than a dozen countries followed Palau's model.
