Regional/Cultural Day
Mazdoor Day
The trade unions march in Lahore and Karachi, and the demands include a higher minimum wage, an end to the exploitation of workers, and the protection of workers' rights. The march is both celebration and protest, and the signs are in Urdu, English, and Punjabi. Pakistan's labor movement has a long history: the first labour rally in the subcontinent was held in Mumbai in 1923, and the tradition of marching on May 1st has continued ever since. In Karachi, the march goes from the labour offices to the Karachi Press Club. In Lahore, it goes from Nasir Bagh to the Punjab Assembly. The speakers shout into megaphones, the workers carry red flags, and the tea shops along the route do their best business of the year.
