Falaj Irrigation Heritage Day

The falaj (plural: aflaj) is the ancient irrigation system that made settlement possible in arid Oman, and five of the best-preserved aflaj systems are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A falaj is an underground channel that taps into an aquifer or spring and carries water by gravity to the fields below : sometimes over distances of 10 kilometres or more. The construction of a falaj is an engineering marvel: the channel must maintain a precise gradient, and the vertical shafts (used for maintenance and ventilation) are dug by hand through solid rock. The falaj system is managed by a community council (wali al-falaj), which allocates water shares to each farmer by precise time intervals : a system of water governance that has operated for over 2,500 years. The falaj is not just infrastructure; it is the social contract that holds Omani village life together.
