Eid al-Fitr

The end of Ramadan. In Iraq, the celebration begins with the Eid prayer at the mosque, followed by family visits, new clothes, and the distribution of Eidi (gift money) to children. The Iraqi Eid table includes kleicha (date-filled pastries), and every family has a recipe that is better than their neighbor's. The kleicha debate is the Iraqi equivalent of the bagel debate: round or flat, date or walnut, and the correct answer is whatever your grandmother made. . 2026: Mar 31. 2027: Mar 20.

Ramadan in Oman

Ramadan in Oman is a month of fasting, prayer, and community. The iftar (breaking of the fast) begins with dates and water, followed by shorba (lentil soup), harees (wheat porridge with meat), and the traditional Omani kahwa (coffee spiced with cardamom). The mosques are full during Ramadan, and the Taraweeh prayers are attended by men and women alike. In the hours before dawn, families share suhoor (the pre-fast meal), and the streets of Muscat are quiet in the daytime heat. After iftar, the city comes alive: the souqs stay open until midnight, families visit each other, and the Ramadan tent (a tradition borrowed from the Gulf) becomes a space for socialising and prayer. The month ends with Eid al-Fitr, and the celebration is three days of feasting, visiting, and gift-giving. . 2026: Mar 31. 2027: Mar 20.
