Frigjoeringsdagen

The anniversary of the liberation of Norway from Nazi occupation on May 8, 1945, is observed with ceremonies at the Akershus Fortress in Oslo and war memorials across the country. The tradition is to lay wreaths, observe a minute of silence, and honor the veterans who fought for freedom. The day is both celebration and remembrance, and the reminder that Norway was occupied for five long years. School children participate in memorial events, and the Norwegian flag is flown on all public buildings.
