The first Secretary-General of the United Nations was Trygve Lie, a Norwegian, and the country has been a steadfast supporter of the UN ever since. Norway is one of the largest contributors to foreign aid per capita, giving over 1 percent of gross national income, and the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo on December 10. The day is observed with ceremonies and the reminder that Norway, a country of 5.5 million people, has an outsized influence on the world stage.
