Sankthansaften

The Sankthansaften is celebrated on the evening of June 23rd, and it is the celebration of the summer solstice and the longest day of the year. The tradition is to light a bonfire on the beach, and the bonfires are lit on every beach, every island, and every fjord in Norway. The Sognefjord, the longest fjord in Norway at 204 kilometers, glows with bonfires from end to end. In northern Norway, the sun does not set at all during this time, and the midnight sun turns night into day. The Sankthansaften is a celebration of light, and the tradition includes singing, dancing, and eating herring with sour cream and flatbread. The bonfire at Slinningen in Aalesund is one of the tallest in the world, reaching over 40 meters.
