Fulani Cattle Day

The Fulani (also called the Fula or Peul) are the largest nomadic pastoral people in the world, and their cattle are the most important symbol of wealth and status. The Fulani cattle are the long-horned white cattle that roam the savannah of northern Nigeria, and the herdsmen move their cattle from the north to the south in the dry season and back again in the wet season. The Fulani cattle culture is one of the oldest in Africa, and the relationship between the herdsman and his cattle is intimate, spiritual, and economic. The cow is sacred, the milk is food, and the cattle are currency.
