Regional/Cultural Day
Day of the African Child
The day commemorating the Soweto uprising of 1976, when black South African students protested against the imposition of Afrikaans as the language of instruction. The day is observed in Nigeria with events organized by children's rights groups, and the focus is on the education, health, and welfare of the Nigerian child. Nigeria has the highest number of out-of-school children in the world (over 10 million), and the day is a call to action.
