International Mother Language Day
The day is observed in Nigeria with events celebrating the over 500 languages spoken in the country. Nigeria is one of the most linguistically diverse nations on earth, and the three major languages (Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo) are spoken by over 100 million people. The day is a reminder that the Nigerian languages are endangered (as English and Pidgin become more dominant), and the events include storytelling, poetry readings, and traditional music performances in the indigenous languages.
