Armed Forces Remembrance Day

The anniversary of the end of the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), when the Biafran forces surrendered to the federal government. The day is observed with ceremonies at the National Arcade in Abuja, and the reminder that over 1 million people died in the war. The day is both remembrance and reflection, and the names of the dead are read aloud at every ceremony. The Biafra war remains the deepest wound in Nigerian history, and the Igbo people still remember the starvation, the blockades, and the suffering of those three years.
