World Environment Day
The day is observed in Nigeria with events organized by environmental groups, and the focus is on the Niger Delta (the oil-producing region in southern Nigeria, where decades of oil spills have devastated the land, the water, and the air). The Niger Delta is one of the most polluted places on earth, and the day is a reminder of the cost of oil wealth. The oil was discovered in Oloibiri (in present-day Bayelsa State) in 1956, and it has been a curse as much as a blessing, fueling corruption, militancy, and environmental destruction.
