Ironsi Remembrance Day

The day commemorating the death of General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, the first military head of state of Nigeria, who was killed in a counter-coup on July 29, 1966. Ironsi was an Igbo officer who took power after the first military coup (January 15, 1966), and his brief reign was marked by ethnic tension and political uncertainty. His death in the counter-coup led to the Nigerian Civil War, and his legacy remains controversial. The day is observed primarily in Igboland, and it is a time of reflection on the cost of political instability.
