Argungu Fishing Festival
The Argungu Fishing Festival is held annually in Argungu (Kebbi State), and it is the largest fishing festival in Africa. Thousands of fishermen line the banks of the Matan Fada River, and at the sound of a gunshot, they jump into the water with their nets and begin fishing. The festival lasts for four days, and the events include the fishing competition, the swimming race, the diving competition, and the cultural displays. The winner is the fisherman who catches the largest fish, and the prize is a car, a motorcycle, or a cash award. The festival is a celebration of the fishing culture of the Kebbi people, and it has been held since 1934.
