Niger was a French colony from 1922 to 1960, and the French influence remains strong : the official language is French, the legal system is based on French law, and the French military still operates from a base in Niamey. Bastille Day is observed by the French community in Niger with a reception at the French Embassy, and the Nigerien elite attend out of courtesy. The day is controversial : some Nigeriens see it as a reminder of colonialism, while others see it as a celebration of the shared Franco-Nigerien heritage. The French expatriate community in Niamey celebrates with wine, cheese, and a pétanque tournament on the grounds of the embassy.
