Regional/Cultural Day
Tubabun Aran
The Nigerien new year begins with family gatherings and the traditional meal of djerma sto (rice with sauce). In Niamey, families along the Niger River prepare large communal meals, and the smell of frying onions and ground spice blends drifts through every quarter. The Hausa call it "Sabbo Shekara," and the tradition is to clean the compound, pay off debts, and start fresh. Children run through the streets in their newest clothes, and the elders sit under the neem trees drinking sweet tea. The new year falls during the cool season (harmattan), when the dry wind from the Sahara drops the temperature to something almost pleasant. In the markets, the women sell fura (millet cakes) and nono (fresh yogurt), and the day is both celebration and renewal : a chance to forget the hardships of the previous year and begin again.
