The day honoring the volunteers and NGOs that work in Niger, and the celebration includes ceremonies, speeches, and the recognition of the important role that international and local organizations play in a country where the government cannot provide basic services. Niger is one of the most aid-dependent countries in the world : over 40% of the national budget comes from foreign aid, and the NGOs provide healthcare, education, and food security to millions of people. The day is both celebration and reflection, and the reminder that the volunteers are often the only presence in the remote villages of the Sahel.
