Journee de la Concorde

The anniversary of the 1995 peace agreement between the government and the Tuareg rebels, which ended the first Tuareg rebellion (1990-1995). The day is observed with ceremonies, and the reminder that Niger is a country of multiple ethnic groups (Hausa 53%, Zarma 21%, Tuareg 10%, Fulani 10%, Kanuri 4%, Arab 1%), and the peace between them is fragile. The Tuareg rebellions were fueled by the marginalization of the northern regions, and the 1995 agreement promised decentralization, development, and integration of Tuareg fighters into the national army. The day is a reminder that peace requires justice, and that the promise of 1995 has not been fully kept.
