Mawlid al-Nabi

The birthday of the Prophet Muhammad is celebrated with a church service : no, a mosque service : and the tradition is to recite the Quran, sing nasheeds (religious songs), and tell stories of the Prophet's life. In Niger, the celebration is especially important in the Sufi brotherhoods (the Tijaniyya and the Qadiriyya), which are the dominant Islamic traditions in the country. The Tijaniyya was founded in North Africa in the 18th century, and it spread to Niger through the Hausa and Zarma traders. The celebration includes the "dhikr" : a ritual of chanting the names of God in a rhythmic pattern that can last for hours, inducing a state of trance and spiritual ecstasy. The day ends with a communal meal, and the tradition is to give food to the poor. . 2026: Sep 5. 2027: Aug 25.
