A day for maps, arrows, labels, warnings, directions, and the quiet civic kindness of making places easier to understand.
The pakjesavond is the highlight of the Sinterklaas season, and it is celebrated on December 5th. The families gather around the fireplace, and the gifts are delivered by the Sinterklaas (or, more commonly, by a family member who has "forgotten something" and gone to the door). The gifts are wrapped in surprise packages (the more creative, the better), and each gift is accompanied by a poem that makes fun of the recipient. The pakjesavond is not just about the gifts. It is about the creativity, the humor, and the love. The best poems are the ones that are personal, funny, and affectionate. The tradition of the surprise package is that the gift is hidden inside something else: a box made of toilet paper rolls, a stuffed animal, a cake, or anything that the giver can imagine. The pakjesavond is the most important family evening of the year, and the children are allowed to stay up late.
