A day celebrating the friet (French fry), which is one of the most popular foods in the Netherlands. The Dutch eat approximately 23 kilograms of friet per person per year, and the friet is sold at frietkot (French fry stands) on every street corner. The friet is served in a paper cone, and the traditional toppings are mayonnaise (friet speciaal), peanut sauce (friet oorlog), or a combination of mayonnaise, ketchup, and onions (friet speciaal). The friet is double-fried: first at a lower temperature to cook the inside, and then at a higher temperature to make the outside crispy. The Dutch claim that the friet was invented in the Netherlands (or Belgium), and the tradition is to eat friet at least once a week.
