Nationale Dropdag

A day celebrating the Dutch love of drop (licorice), and the Netherlands is the largest consumer of licorice in the world. The Dutch eat approximately 32 million kilograms of licorice per year, and the average Dutch person consumes 2 kilograms per year. The Dutch licorice comes in two varieties: zoet (sweet) and dubbel zout (double salt). The sweet licorice is soft and chewy, and the salt licorice is hard and salty. The salt licorice is an acquired taste, and most foreigners find it disgusting. The Dutch, however, love it, and the saying goes that you can tell a real Dutch person by their love of drop. The most popular brands of licorice in the Netherlands are Venco, Klene, and Pontac, and the licorice is sold in every supermarket, drugstore, and candy shop in the country.
