Koninginnedag

The former Queen's Day was celebrated on April 30th (the birthday of Queen Juliana), and it was the most important national holiday until King Willem-Alexander took the throne in 2013 and moved the celebration to his own birthday on April 27th. The older generation still remembers Queen's Day with nostalgia, and some people still celebrate on April 30th. The tradition of the vrijmarkt (free market) was started on Queen's Day in the 1980s, and it has grown into the largest flea market in the world. The oranjegekte (orange madness) was also a feature of Queen's Day, and the tradition of wearing orange dates back to the 19th century.
