The day honoring animals, and the celebration includes the blessing of the pets at the church, the visiting of the zoo, and the tradition of giving your pet an extra treat. The Netherlands is one of the most animal-friendly countries in the world (the Party for the Animals has 6 seats in parliament), and the day is both celebration and demand. The Artis Royal Zoo in Amsterdam is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands (opened in 1838), and it houses over 900 species. The Dutch have a long tradition of animal welfare, and the world's first animal welfare law was passed in the Netherlands in 1869.
