Nationale Bitterballdag
A day celebrating the bitterbal, the most beloved Dutch snack. The bitterbal is a small, round, deep-fried meatball with a crispy breadcrumb coating and a creamy ragout filling. The ragout is made from beef or veal, and the bitterbal is served with mustard. The bitterbal is the king of the Dutch borrel (drinking snack), and it is traditionally served in cafes and bars alongside a glass of beer. The bitterbal was invented in the 18th century as a way to use leftover meat, and it has become a national institution. The tradition is to eat bitterballen with a toothpick, and the best bitterballen are the ones that are served piping hot, with the ragout oozing out when you bite into them. The Dutch eat approximately 300 million bitterballen per year.
