A day celebrating Delft blue pottery (Delfts blauw), the iconic blue and white ceramic that has been produced in Delft since the 17th century. The Delft blue pottery was inspired by Chinese porcelain, which was imported to the Netherlands by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The potters in Delft developed their own style, using a blue cobalt oxide on a white tin glaze, and the Delft blue pottery became one of the most famous products of the Netherlands. The Royal Delft (De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles) is the only remaining factory from the 17th century, and it still produces pottery by hand. The day is marked by pottery workshops, exhibitions, and the tradition of painting your own Delft blue tile.
