Nationale Deltadag
A day celebrating the Delta Works, the largest flood defense system in the world. The Delta Works was built after the North Sea flood of 1953, which killed 1,836 people and flooded 200,000 hectares of land. The flood defense system consists of 13 sections, including dams, sluices, locks, dikes, and storm surge barriers, and it was declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The most impressive part of the Delta Works is the Oosterscheldekering (Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier), which is 9 kilometers long and can be raised when a storm approaches. The Netherlands is below sea level for approximately one-third of its territory, and the Dutch have been fighting the water for over 1,000 years.
