Regional/Cultural Day
Internationale Vrouwendag
The day is observed with events organized by women's groups, and the demands include equal pay, an end to domestic violence, and the recognition of women's contributions to the economy. The Netherlands has one of the highest rates of part-time employment for women in Europe (60% of women work part-time), and the gender pay gap is 14%. The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage (in 2001), and the city of Amsterdam has a long history of feminist activism. The day is marked by rallies, lectures, and the giving of flowers to women.
