Nationale Ontbijtdag

A day celebrating the Dutch breakfast, which is one of the most distinctive in the world. The Dutch breakfast consists of bread with hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles), kaas (cheese), or vleeswaren (cold cuts), and a cup of koffie verkeerd (latte). The tradition of eating hagelslag on bread is uniquely Dutch, and the Dutch are the only people in the world who put chocolate sprinkles on their bread as a regular meal. The Dutch also eat ontbijtkoek (spiced breakfast cake) and beschuit met muisjes (rusk with sprinkles, which is traditionally served when a baby is born). The beschuit met muisjes is a round rusk covered with butter and sprinkles, and the sprinkles are pink for a girl and blue for a boy. The tradition dates back to the 19th century, when the muisjes (little mice) were named after the shape of the sprinkles, which were originally anise seeds covered in sugar.
