Prinsjesdag

The day the king delivers the Speech from the Throne (Troonrede), outlining the government's plans for the coming year. The king arrives at the Ridderzaal (Knight's Hall) in The Hague in the Golden Carriage (de Gouden Koets), and the carriage is pulled by eight horses. The Golden Carriage is made of teak wood and covered in gold leaf, and it was given to Queen Wilhelmina by the people of Amsterdam in 1898. The Speech from the Throne is written by the prime minister and the cabinet, and the king reads it on behalf of the government. After the speech, the minister of finance presents the budget (the "koffertrui" or briefcase tradition), and the tradition is that the minister of finance carries the budget in a briefcase. The day is marked by protests, debates, and the traditional "honingtrui" (honey sweater) worn by the king.
