A day celebrating the stroopwafel, the national snack of the Netherlands. The stroopwafel (syrup waffle) is made from two thin waffles with a layer of caramel syrup in between, and it was invented in Gouda in 1810. The best way to eat a stroopwafel is to place it on top of a cup of hot coffee or tea, and the steam will soften the syrup and make it gooey. The stroopwafel is sold at markets and festivals, where the baker makes them fresh on a waffle iron, spreads the syrup, and hands them out warm. The original Gouda stroopwafel is larger and thinner than the supermarket version, and the syrup is made from caramel, brown sugar, and cinnamon. The Dutch eat approximately 22 million stroopwafels per year.
