National Democracy Day Season

The anniversary of the 1990 People's Movement (Jana Andolan) that ended the Panchayat system and restored multiparty democracy in Nepal. The day is observed with ceremonies at the Democracy Gate (Prajantra Dwar) in Kathmandu, and the major political parties hold rallies and speeches. The 1990 movement was the second democratic revolution in Nepal (after the 1951 revolution), and it was followed by the 2006 movement that abolished the monarchy. Democracy Day is both a celebration and a reminder that democracy in Nepal has been hard-won and remains fragile, with political instability, corruption, and unfinished constitutional reforms.
