Constitution Day Season

The anniversary of the promulgation of the 2015 Constitution of Nepal, which established Nepal as a federal democratic republic with seven provinces. The constitution was the result of a decade of civil war (1996-2006) and eight years of negotiation, and it replaced the interim constitution that had governed the country since the abolition of the monarchy in 2008. The day is observed with official ceremonies, flag hoisting, and speeches, but it is also a day of protest for those who feel the constitution does not adequately represent marginalized communities, including the Madhesi, Tharu, and indigenous groups. The constitution is the third in Nepal's history (after 1948 and 1990), and the debate over its implementation continues.
