The coconut tree is Nauru's lifeline. Every part is used: the milk for drinking, the meat for eating, the husks for fuel, the fronds for weaving. On a coral atoll with no rivers and no natural surface water beyond Buada Lagoon, the coconut tree is the only plant that gives more than it takes. Nauruans can read the age of a coconut grove the way northerners read tree rings.
