July 10th, 1973, when the Bahamas became a sovereign nation, and every year the flags come out, the Junkanoo rushes, and the harbor fills with boats. The national anthem plays on every radio station, the churches hold thanksgiving services, and children recite the pledge in schools across every island. It is a day of pride, of pageantry, and of eating everything in sight at whatever cookout your family chose.
Command Ridge is the highest point in Nauru at 71 meters above sea level. Seventy-one meters. The world's smallest nation's highest point would not qualify as a hill in most countries. But on Nauru, Command Ridge has a view of the entire island : the green coastal strip, the moonscaped interior, the endless blue of the Pacific on every side. You can stand at the top and see everything Nauru is and everything it used to be.
A day for pencils, forms, snacks, chargers, books, forgotten papers, and the nightly search before morning.
A day for checking the remote, the toy, the flashlight, the clock, and the one drawer everyone opens first.
