The churches of Nauru begin rehearsing their Christmas programs in the first week of December. The Protestant church and the Catholic church both hold carol nights, and the competition is friendly but real. The Nauruan-language carols are haunting : the harmonies come from a tradition that predates missionaries, adapted to Christian words. When a whole island sings, the sound carries across the water.
