A reckoning day. Nauru's phosphate trust fund once held over a billion Australian dollars. The money was invested in a series of ventures that ranged from questionable to catastrophic: a fleet of ships, hotels in other countries, a London musical called "Leonardo" that closed after one night, and Air Nauru's fleet of Boeings. By the 1990s, the trust was nearly empty. The day is not officially observed, but every Nauruan knows what was lost.
