The interior of Nauru tells the story of the phosphate era in a way no museum can. The mined-out landscape is a moonscape of white coral pinnacles rising like jagged teeth from barren ground. Eighty percent of the island's interior was strip-mined. From the air, Nauru looks like a fried egg : a green coastal ring around a devastated white center. The pinnacles are beautiful in a post-apocalyptic way, and they are permanent. You cannot put topsoil back on coral.
You discover Tokelau's marine-focused fauna with tropical fish, sea turtles, seabirds including frigatebirds and boobies, and coconut crabs inhabiting the atoll environment. You learn that Tokelauan families keep dogs, cats, and chickens as their primary pets and food sources. ACADA celebrates the world's pets, and helps assure better care.
