Dia de la Raza

National holiday. The holiday has been renamed and reclaimed, but the conversation continues. Chile's indigenous peoples, especially the Mapuche, have shaped the country's identity, its land disputes, its politics, and its future. Today is for listening.

Etoshapandag — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Etoshapandag

A day celebrating the Etosha Pan, a 4,800 square kilometer salt flat in northern Namibia that is visible from space. The pan is the remnant of a vast inland lake that dried up thousands of years ago, leaving behind a blinding white crust of salt and minerals. During the dry season from May to October, the waterholes around the pan attract concentrations of wildlife that rival any park in Africa: lions, leopards, elephants, black rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and springbok gather at the shrinking water sources. The name Etosha means "great white place" in Oshiwambo.
