Welwitschiamirabilis Dag
A celebration of the Welwitschia mirabilis, the living fossil plant that grows only in the Namib Desert. Each Welwitschia plant produces only two leaves throughout its entire lifetime, and those leaves grow continuously, becoming shredded and tangled by the desert wind over centuries. The largest known specimens are estimated at 2,000 years old, making them some of the oldest living organisms on earth. The plant was discovered by Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch in 1859, who reportedly fell to his knees in awe. The Welwitschia survives on fog from the Atlantic, drawing moisture through specialized stomata on its leaves.
