Dia de la Independencia

Argentina declared independence in Tucuman in 1816, and the Casa Historica stands there still. Families gather for locro, empanadas, and pastelitos, the fried pastry with sweet potato that appears on every independence table. The asado runs all afternoon and someone always plays folklore on guitar.

Diamantdag

A day marking the discovery of diamonds at Kolmannskuppe in 1908 and the subsequent diamond rush that transformed the Namibian economy. The Sperrgebiet (Forbidden Area), a 26,000 square kilometer restricted zone along the southern coast, remains off-limits to the public due to ongoing diamond mining. Kolmannskuppe, once a thriving German diamond town with a casino, theater, and the first tram in Africa, is now a ghost town being reclaimed by the desert sand.
