Cassinga-dag
The anniversary of the 1978 Cassinga massacre, when the South African Defence Force bombed a SWAPO refugee camp at Cassinga in Angola, killing over 600 Namibian refugees, mostly women and children. The day is observed with ceremonies, and the reminder that the independence struggle was fought on two fronts: inside Namibia and in exile. The Cassinga massacre is the defining tragedy of the Namibian independence struggle, and the names of the dead are read aloud at every ceremony.
