The anniversary of the 1962 student protests at Rangoon University, when students demonstrated against the military coup led by General Ne Win. The protests were crushed, and the student union building was dynamited on July 8, 1962. The day is observed by students and pro-democracy activists as a reminder that the struggle for academic freedom and democracy in Myanmar has deep roots.
