Regional/Cultural Day

Shan Pyi Hnit Thit Ku

The Shan people celebrate their state day, commemorating the 1947 Panglong Agreement in which Shan leaders agreed to join the Union of Myanmar. The Shan are the largest ethnic minority in Myanmar, and Shan State covers nearly a quarter of the country's territory. The celebration includes traditional Shan dances, the serving of Shan noodles (shan khauk swet), and the launching of sky lanterns. The Shan have a rich cultural tradition that includes their own literature, martial arts, and a distinct school of Buddhist practice.
