Azani Nei

The anniversary of the assassination of General Aung San and his cabinet members in 1947, observed with a solemn ceremony at the Martyrs' Mausoleum in Yangon. The national flag is flown at half-mast, and a two-minute silence is observed at 10:37 AM, the exact time of the assassination. Aung San's daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, is the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who led the pro-democracy movement. The day carries added weight since the 2021 coup, which many see as a betrayal of Aung San's vision for a democratic Myanmar.

Bokyok Aung San Tanthar Nei

The anniversary of the assassination of General Aung San and six members of his cabinet on July 19, 1947. Aung San is the father of modern Myanmar, and he was assassinated just months before the country gained independence. The day is observed with ceremonies at the Martyrs' Mausoleum in Yangon, and the names of the martyrs are read aloud. The day is both celebration and remembrance, a reminder that independence was won with blood.
