The anniversary of the Saffron Revolution of 2007, when thousands of Buddhist monks marched through the streets of Yangon and other cities to protest against the military junta's economic policies and political repression. The monks' peaceful protests were met with a violent crackdown by the military, and hundreds of monks were arrested, beaten, and killed. The event was called the Saffron Revolution because of the color of the monks' robes, and it was the largest pro-democracy protest in Myanmar since the 1988 uprising.
