Dia da Crianca Africana

The anniversary of the 1976 Soweto uprising in South Africa, when thousands of black schoolchildren protested against the apartheid government's decision to impose Afrikaans as the language of instruction. The day is observed across Africa, and in Mozambique it is a reminder that the struggle for education continues. The Ministry of Education organizes events in every school, and the children recite poems, sing songs, and present plays about the importance of education. The day is also a celebration of African identity, and the children wear traditional clothing and perform traditional dances.
