Dia de Reyes

Kids leave their shoes out the night before and wake up hoping for a gift from the Reyes Magos. The panaderias sell roscon de reyes, the ring-shaped sweet bread with a plastic baby hidden inside. Whoever finds the baby hosts the next gathering, though everyone forgets by February.

Dia dos Reis

The feast of the Three Kings is celebrated in the Catholic communities of Mozambique, particularly in the southern provinces where Portuguese influence remains strong. Children leave their shoes outside the door on the night of January 5, and in the morning they find small gifts and sweets. The day is marked by church services, family meals, and the sharing of bolo-rei (king cake), a Portuguese tradition that has taken root in Mozambican households. In the rural areas, the day also marks the beginning of the agricultural cycle, and farmers consult the elders about the planting season.
